最も一般的かつ確実なアートの選び方

The most common and reliable way to choose art.

Many people want to incorporate art into their lives, but they often don't know what to choose. So this time, I've compiled some of my own advice on choosing art. I hope these points and ideas will be helpful to those of you who are struggling with this decision. My apologies if this comes across as a bit condescending.

Trust your intuition.

First and foremost, it's crucial to trust your own intuition. Art is deeply personal, and you don't need to be swayed by other people's opinions or trends. Visit shops, galleries, and museums (though buying authentic pieces can be difficult...) and look for pieces that intuitively resonate with you. Abstract art, in particular, is often best appreciated, as the artists themselves often say, by simply letting your feelings guide you. However, I understand it's difficult. I completely understand the hesitation. "I thought it was this one a moment ago, but maybe this one is better," or "I like this one, but my partner likes that one." That's perfectly normal. While I'd love to say, "Just get both!", if you need to narrow it down to one piece, one item, then trust your gut feeling. The piece that you bravely choose and that truly speaks to your heart will surely enrich your life.

Reflect your hobbies and interests.

Choosing art related to your hobbies and interests is one way to go. For example, if you like nature, choose landscape paintings or works with plants as motifs. If you like urban landscapes, choose works depicting cities like Paris or Tokyo. If you like sports, choose works depicting stadiums or scenes from competitions. This way, your hobbies and art will harmonize, and you will feel more comfortable with them.

Consider the harmony with the space.

It's also important to consider the space where you'll be displaying the art and to be mindful of its harmony with that space. The type, size, and color scheme of the art you choose will vary depending on where you plan to display it, such as in a living room, bedroom, or office. For example, you might choose a piece with calm colors for a room where you want to relax, or a bright and energetic piece for a space where you want to liven things up. Abstract pieces that stimulate the brain might be good for an office. Lately, the proportion of patterned furniture, curtains, and rugs has decreased considerably, so art will be a good accent in any space.

Learn about the different types of art.

Art encompasses a wide variety of forms, including not only paintings but also photography, sculpture, printmaking, and digital art. To discover your own artistic preferences, it's a good idea to explore different types of art. We recommend experiencing diverse works through art fairs, exhibitions, and online galleries.

Consider the budget.

Budget is an important factor when buying art. High-priced pieces aren't the only ones with value. There are many wonderful works by unknown or emerging artists, and the frames themselves can actually be quite expensive. The key is to find a piece you truly love within your budget.

Was this helpful? I can hear you saying, "I already knew that!" (laughs), but personally, except for those buying as an investment, I feel that the points mentioned above, especially the first one, " trust your own sensibilities," are paramount. It's not true that you can't choose because you "lack taste" or "lack knowledge"! If you and your partner disagree, it's fine to discuss it and find common ground, but try your best to stand your ground. Of course, if you don't find anything that resonates with you, there's no need to force yourself to buy something. But if you find a piece that really strikes you, go ahead and put it up. Even if you regret it later, it's not a huge expense if it's just a poster.

There are plenty of places to display them, such as the entrance, toilet, living room, bedroom, etc., and there's no rule that says you can only put one in each place. Just changing them out occasionally should give you a change of pace, like you've redecorated.

Surround yourself with art that you've chosen based on your own sensibilities, and enrich your daily life!
